Golf :

You can challenge your friends/ family to a game of golf at the famous Edzell Golf ClubIt is a 5 minute drive/10 minute walk (or 15 minutes with a heavy golf cart)  to the start of the18 hole course.  The 9 hole course is just 2 minutes away and is well sign posted.  The 9 hole course is great for juniors/ beginners or people wanting a fun game of golf as it is short, well laid out and with lovely scenery. Edzell golfcourse also has a Driving Range and Putting Green.  Edzell Golf course is one of the top 70 courses in the UK.

Cycling/mountain bike trails:

Quiet country roads of Angus provide an ideal opportunity for you to explore the surrounding area on your bike.  There are designated mountain bike trails a short drive from the cottage (routes and maps are available in the cottage).

Walks:

From the village of Edzell there are beautiful riverside walks along the gorge of the North Esk River. The cottage is also within walking distance of Edzell Castle and the hill forts also known as the Brown & White Catherthuns.  Edzell is the gateway to the Angus Glens and the Cairngorms National Park where there are a range of walks to suit all abilities (again, routes and maps are provided in the cottage).

Sports and Activities:

The cottage provides equipment for badminton, volleyball and french boules. There is a wide range of activities that can be explored in the surrounding area. E.g. Kayaking, canoeing, fishing and paintball. (Bedlam paintball)

Beaches:

Amongst the many sandy beaches three of our favourites are: St Cyrus, Montrose and Lunan Bay. All three beaches are within a twenty minute drive from the cottage.  Montrose beach has a "Splash" playpark, pitch&put, amusements and toilet facilities.  St. Cyrus is a nature reserve and visitor centre.  You might also like to take a kite (we have provided a bucket and spade in case you forget to pack one).

Shopping:

There are a wide variety of local shops specialising in farm produce, crafts, garden centers and coffee shops.  For larger stores, Aberdeen and Dundee are within 40 minutes driving and provide excellent shopping opportunities as well as cultural events including music concerts, theatre and museums.

Historical Sites:

If you like historic sights you can visit the much loved Edzell Castle. The castle is a photographer’s paradise with its beautiful gardens and surrounding countryside- on a true Scottish summers day it really glows.  Edzell castle is a rare example of renaissance architecture in Scotland.  The castle is a 25 minute walk on the flat through quiet countryside (or a 5 minute drive).  You might also like to visit  Dunnotter Castle with its dramatic setting and Glamis Castle which is really worth a visit.

You can also visit Pictavia which located is at Brechin Garden Centre. There you will find lots of information telling the meaning of the carvings found on the Pictish stones  throughout angus.

Relaxation:

If it's relaxation you are after then grab a deck chair from the garage and enjoy the sights and sounds of the wildlife around you.  You can see: pheasants, red squirrels, rabbits and hares.  For the birdwatchers amongst you there are a variety of birds to be seen.  Our favourite is the woodpecker.
